full cup

My partner teacher and I always talk about how teaching can, at times, completely drain us. Sometimes it feels as if our cup has only one single drop left in it. Yet somehow, every time, right on cue, it gets filled back up.

Today was that day.

We watched a video about international women’s day. When the video ended one of my boys raised his hand. I called on him.

“You know what I loved most about that video?”

“What did you love most?”

“I loved that there were men in that video. Men supporting those women and protesting with them. I personally believe women are brave, strong, warriors. I once saw a woman flip over a firetruck tire on American Ninja Warrior. They can do anything a man can do. All women are warriors. They inspire me.”

The class sat silent, soaking in the words as he spoke. When he finished they hooted and hollered and cheered him on. I sat at my desk fighting the urge to cry on the spot. This moment was unprompted, raw, and real. He meant every word that he said. It was refreshing to see a generation so proud of women.

Yet again, my cup was full.

  1. Such insight. This gave me goosebumps. I’m glad he recognized men supporting women. It’s important for everyone to see that. Strong people supporting one another.

  2. This shows the true power of one lesson and the emotions that it can bring out of our students. This was truly a powerful day and it sounds like that was an incredible moment. If only more discussions like this could happen in more classrooms.
